Zack Wheeler M/L Than 7.5 Strikeouts
The Phillies are back in action after just a day off from their London trip. While that’s not a reason alone to fade the team or Zack Wheeler, it certainly can’t help with them being the road team in Boston. Kutter Crawford gets this lineup fresh off its trip, and the Phillies will most likely start a little slow. Wheeler has exceptional numbers as a leading Cy Young candidate but doesn’t need to rely on strikeouts to win games. Sure, his 28.5% strikeout rate is a weapon against opposing hitters, but he’s been able to pitch to contact too — holding an impressive .198 xBA. Wheeler could easily get through seven innings with five strikeouts, keeping control of this game while not relying on the whiffs.
He’s actually been under this number quite a few times over recent starts, contrary to what most people may think when seeing his name on the starter sheet. The Phillies have seen consistent, deeper starts by Wheeler into games, while the spikes in strikeouts seem to come against the worst hackers at the plate. After a strong April where Wheeler was dominating the 7.5 projection, he’s failed to hit eight strikeouts in five of his last seven starts. It’s going to be harder on the road in Boston against this healthier Sox team. We go less than 7.5 strikeouts for Wheeler.

Charlie Blackmon M/L Than 1.5 Total Bases
The Rockies are down in the dumps, no shock there. They sit 20 games below .500 as they are in Minnesota tonight taking on Louis Varland. It’s going to take a miracle for this team to finish anywhere near where it currently sits. Much like the team around him, Charlie Blackmon is struggling at the plate. The lone saving grace for Blackmon is that he isn’t striking out, but he’s not doing much else either. Blackmon is hanging on with a 11.7% strikeout rate, but his .303 xwOBA and 84.4 EV are concerning.
This isn’t the toughest matchup Blackmon will face all year as Minnesota sends Varland to the hill, but most matchups are going to challenge Blackmon. With the Rockies providing very little around him, Blackmon faces an uphill battle trying to muster up some extra0base hits. There’s certainly an opportunity for the Rockies to get to Varland, but with Cal Quantrill on the other side, this game might still get out of hand for Colorado.
