PGA DFS: Scottish Open Tournament Preview

Whenever the PGA Tour goes to Europe, wind and weather are always factors to consider, and this week is no exception. Be sure to monitor the forecasts leading up to tee times.

The players will contend with a par-70 course stretching approximately 7,300 yards. While it’s not particularly demanding off the tee, avoiding the rough is crucial to ensure manageable approach shots.

Although the course isn’t excessively long, expect to see many medium- to long-range iron shots. In Scotland, scrambling around the greens and making sand saves can be especially challenging, particularly if the weather turns harsh. Despite the strong and comprehensive field, Scottie Scheffler will not be participating, so Rory McIlroy is taking the top spot in the salaries.

PGA DFS Picks: Top Values

Rickie Fowler

DFS Salary
DraftKings: $6,400
FanDuel: $8,800

Fowler is a dangerous option, as he is capable of taking himself out of a tournament quickly. Despite the risk, he actually has been consistent this year, making seven of his last nine cuts, including at two majors. More recently he placed 20th at the Travelers and 31st at the Rocket Mortgage, and his combo of irons and putting is working. That will prove to be useful here, and if he can replicate it, he’s in line for a good showing.

One other factor that is a positive is Fowler has plenty of experience here and with links golf in general. With adverse conditions, unique features and a different feel than traditional PGA Tour golf, it’s a big plus to have some experience dealing with those factors. At a mid-$6,000 price tag, the ownership won’t be there, and Fowler makes for an intriguing target given some promise with the approach and putting numbers lately.

Seamus Power

DFS Salary
DraftKings: $6,400
FanDuel: $8,300

If you don’t want to target Fowler, then Power is another option at the same price point. He also comes in with some momentum, having recorded 39 birdies over the last two PGA Tour events that were absolute birdie fests. This layout will prove much more difficult, but Power has a well-rounded game that translates well here. He historically hasn’t had the success you would want at links golf, but limited reps and a game trending in the right direction put him in play.

Power has a pretty stable distribution of strokes gained across the board in two straight events. Zooming out, off the tee is probably the biggest concern, but this course isn’t overly demanding length-wise. Like with Fowler, I don’t expect much ownership here either, so it makes sense to get over the field with Power.

Lee Hodges

DFS Salary
DraftKings: $6,100
FanDuel: $8,200

Hodges has another low-$6,000 price point, and he comes into this event with an interesting 2024 resume. He was playing some of the best golf of his career just a few months ago, highlighted by a 12th-place finish at The PGA Championship. Lately the form has regressed with a missed cut and a 77th in the last two events, but the numbers tell a different story. Last week at the John Deere, Hodges lost eight strokes putting, which is going to cap the upside. During his good run of form in May, he gained with the putter in four straight events, so clearly that’s something he needs to get back to. Hodges has made seven of eight cuts, the irons still are stable and the price point checks out.

There isn’t a lot of data about Hodges and links golf, but he did finish 12th at this event last year with all four rounds under par. His skillset should also translate to this type of golf where there isn’t a premium on distance and being able to dial it in with the irons is crucial. Hodges is similar to Fowler and Power in that he checks enough boxes to be in the pool this week and possibly the last man in lineups.
