PGA DFS: PGA Championship Tournament Preview

Valhalla Golf Club has a rich history of hosting major championships, including three editions of the PGA Championship. However, its last appearance as host was in 2014, so drawing direct conclusions from events a decade old might not be entirely relevant, even if Rory McIlroy won.

The course is a par 71 of approximately 7,600 yards, posing challenges of various kinds. While water comes into play on several holes, recent reports indicate there will be punishing rough, adding another layer of difficulty. Given the setup for a major championship, precision ball striking and scrambling skills are vital for success. Overall, players need to be in top form to navigate this course effectively, with metrics like total driving and consistent ball striking being particularly important.

PGA DFS Picks: Top Values

Christiaan Bezuidenhout

DFS Salary
DraftKings: $6,600
FanDuel: $8,400

This is no surprise, as I play Bezuidenhout about as often as I can in PGA DFS. He is an appealing $6,600 on DraftKings and comes in playing some quality golf, including a 16th last week at Quail Hollow — a course with some similarities to Valhalla. Bezuidenhout has gained around the green and putting in six straight evens, so this is a world-class short game we are talking about.

The big concern here is off the tee when playing a 7,600-yard course. It’s not the strength of Bezuidenhout’s game, and almost all the bad outcomes here result from him not being able to drive the ball accurately. Still, with his game in good shape and the price more than reasonable, Bezuidenhout is in the pool as a great pay-down option this week.

The PGA Lineup Generator is one of our easiest-to-use but also most effective tools we offer. All you need to do is select the DFS site and slate you plan to play, choose the level of ownership you want from your lineups (chalky, contrarian, balanced or all) and players you wish to lock in. Once you’re satisfied, Lineup Generator will churn out high-ROI lineups and give you the information to determine how you want to proceed.

Jake Knapp

DFS Salary
DraftKings: $6,300
FanDuel: $8,200

We head to the bottom of the $6,000 range here with Knapp, who has had a breakthrough 2024. He won in February in Mexico, which then got him competing in the premier events of the season. He subsequently made the cut at the Players and the Masters despite not getting close to contending. Plus, his game seems to have a lot going for it, even if there isn’t as much consistency as some of the more recognizable names have.

Knapp has the distance off the tee, which should give him the opportunity to get some short irons into his hands. At Wells Fargo last week, he gained nearly four strokes off the tee but was horrendous on the approach, which led to an 58th-place finish. His short game is a mixed bag, but that’s something we can live with for a guy in this range. Knapp has made 10 of the last 11 cuts and finished third at Farmers, and his salary allows a lot to be allocated elsewhere. Ownership shouldn’t gravitate towards Knapp, which furthers my interest in him this week.

Jordan Smith

DFS Salary
DraftKings: $5,500
FanDuel: $7,400

We get treated to a $5,000 price range, which opens up the roster combinations for lineups this week. It’s needed when you consider that Scottie Scheffler is in the uncharted $13,000 territory, and getting to him and other top end players requires savings elsewhere. Fortunately, we have some guys at the bottom who can get in the mix, and Smith is one to keep an eye on. He is a DPWT player who is in form and has past experience at majors.

It’s hard to know about quality of fields in terms of recent form, but if you take the career profile, then Smith clearly has shown he can handle a major. He’s made three of four cuts in majors over the last two years and has a top-10 at a PGA Championship back in 2017. Ironically, that was played at Quail Hollow, which again compares nicely to Valhalla. Smith’s game is well rounded, and his salary places him near some of the PGA Professionals in the field. I’m not actively targeting Smith, but if he pops up in my lineups, I will gladly take the savings.
