We could debate the merits of the “fifth major” tag, but one thing is for sure and that is this is a marquee event with all the best on Tour looking for an early season statement. Unlike the other elevated events, this is a full field with players ranging from the elite to lesser-known names looking for a miracle run. Just like Bay Hill last week, a big positive is that we know all about TPC Sawgrass. The Pete Dye course is famous for the island green which can derail any round with a few water balls. As dramatic as that is there isn’t much to plan for besides “don’t hit it in the water.” What we can plan for is a technical layout that doesn’t allow you just to grip it and rip it, so iron play will be key. The par 5’s are still out there and scoring on them is a key to success. Arnold Palmer winner Scottie Scheffler was -12 on the par 5’s with zero bogeys last week and that was a main piece to taking down the tournament. One small thing to monitor is the weather, as rain could be in the forecast making the course potentially softer and more receptive.

Doug Ghim

I can’t imagine Doug Ghim is sneaky this week given his sub-7k price tag and form. Four straight Top-20 finishes has the game in rock-solid shape and with the ball striking leading the way it’s easy to think this can continue.
Ghim has always been talented, but it seems like the consistency is there and he’s peaking at the right time.
Another positive is Ghim has some experience at Sawgrass including a sixth–place finish in 2022. If his tee-to-green game remains at the level we’ve seen so far in 2024 this is an easy click into basically any type of build this week. Ownership wise, he could be one of the more popular pay-down options, but I think it’s warranted given the price and talent Ghim possesses.

I talked about Billy Horschel in my PGA DFS picks when the Florida swing began at the Cognizant Classic as this part of the season is where he does his best work. He’s not shy about letting people know his affinity for Florida golf and the former Gator kicked things off in style with a ninth-place finish just a few weeks ago. It was his best finish of 2024, and he gained strokes across the board, which is of course a huge confidence booster heading into Sawgrass.
With the field so deep it’s no surprise Horschel isn’t getting a ton of steam or love in the pricing. He sits at a reasonable 6.6K and given so many other options I’d be surprised if he is popular. The Horschel-Florida connection definitely won’t make him unowned either, but if you are aggressive up top with Scheffler and another high-end golfer this is the type of player worth considering. Despite not threatening the top of the board, Billy Ho has found the weekend here in six of his last eight appearances. I’ll call for him to once again give us 72 holes of action and return a quality result on this appealing price tag.

This is a big boom/bust play, but in order to contend in these large field GPP’s sometimes you have to take a guy like this and hope he connects the dots. Taylor Pendrith is a talent no doubt, but the mistakes at times have sent him packing after Friday and that of course is a concern here. The positives also stand out with a 6K price tag and a projected ownership of just around 1%.
Form wise, we immediately see the volatile nature of the game with three missed cuts in 2024 packaged around two top-10 finishes. You could take that in a positive saying that two of his five starts resulted in a first page of the leaderboard finish, but we also quickly see the danger here. The putting has improved, the off-the-tee game is always strong, but we need to ensure quality iron play if we are going to get the best version of the Canadian here. I like putting him in the pool and banking on that upside.
