NBA DFS Picks Today: Building Blocks

James Harden: Clippers at 76ers

How crazy is it that James Harden is the last man standing, with Joel Embiid, Paul George and Kawhi Leonard appearing in only 12 combined games this season?

Philadelphia has turned into a tire fire inside of a dumpster fire, and there does not appear to be much of a path forward, as Embiid is feuding with everyone and a 3-12 record has the Sixers teetering on the brink of an insurmountable deficit in the standings.

One more tidbit to underscore just how incomprehensible the situation has become in Philadelphia: The Washington Wizards (2-12) are the only team with fewer wins than the 76ers.

Harden continues chugging along, and he is back to scoring 20-plus points per game while also adding 7.6 rebounds, 8.8 points, and 2.5 combined blocks and steals. Even more of the offensive burden will be on him with Norman Powell slated to miss a third consecutive game with his hamstring issue. Philadelphia is a middling defense without Embiid and George, so it would not be a complete surprise to see Harden lead his squad to victory as a slight road favorite.

The absence of Powell means more offensive opportunities for Kris Dunn, Amir Coffey, Derrick Jones and Kevin Porter Jr. Currently, Porter is projecting to be one of the five most popular options on the slate, but it is important to note that he has played more than 25 minutes only twice this season. He does get fourth quarter run, though he needs to be with the starting unit coming out of halftime in order to push for 22-plus minutes.

Ivica Zubac is only the fifth-most popular center-only player on FanDuel (9.3%), though he projects to be on nearly one-third of all DraftKings lineups with the utility slot allowing for more flexibility. The ninth-year pro is averaging a career-high 12.5 rebounds, and while his 15.1 points per game are also a personal best, he has been hit or miss, with double-digit field goal attempts in only four of his last 10 games.

After missing six games due to a hamstring injury, Tyrese Maxey crushed on Friday in his second game back. The reigning Most Improved Player dropped 26 points on 11 of 17 (65%) shooting, clearing 50 fantasy points on FanDuel and falling a bucket shy on DraftKings. He did all of this in 26.5 minutes, so the hope is that today he sees closer to 30 minutes of run.

Rookie Jared McCain has been making it rain with 20-plus points and three or more made 3-pointers in the last seven games. He moved into the starting lineup five games ago, and the 16th overall selection in the 2024 NBA Draft has been the one small silver lining for the City of Brotherly Love this season.

Guerschon Yabusele also is a fun story, turning an impressive Olympic run for France into a second chance in The Association. He had two seasons with Boston between 2017 and 2019 then played abroad after no other NBA teams were interested in his services. He drew his second start of the season on Friday and could remain with the first five over Andre Drummond.

Reggie Jackson gets a “Remember Me?!” game against one of his four former teams, but it is his cheap salary on DraftKings ($3,300) that has him popping up in the early projections. Expect him to be replaced by some other value option as the Sunday NBA shenanigans strike closer to lock.

DeMar DeRozan: Kings vs. Nets

FanDuel has decided to skip the final game of the night for the first time in weeks, which is a departure from DraftKings. The blue site is also including the Wizards-Pacers game, and that has some enticing players such as Bennedict Mathurin, Pascal Siakam, T.J. McConnell, Malcolm Brogdon and Bilal Coulibaly.

DeMar DeRozan missed three games with back spasms, but the 35-year-old was good to go on Friday, tallying 36.1 minutes of action. Malik Monk remains out, so we should see DeRozan assume the role of the primary wing scorer. This matchup appears to be a more closely contested affair than Raptors-Cavaliers, which could see the core Cavs playing under 30 minutes.

Domantas Sabonis has the highest median fantasy projection on the slate, and the Rebound King has double-doubles in 13 of his 14 outings plus a trio of triple-doubles. De’Aaron Fox set a franchise record with 60 points when DeRozan was out, following it up with 49 points the next night when both Sabonis and DeRozan sat. He is averaging a career-high 28.8 points per game while also being among the league leaders in steals. Kevin Huerter takes a hit with the return of DeRozan, leaving Keegan Murray as the fourth and final DFS option from the Kings.

Cameron Johnson has been stupendous over the last two games, scoring 34 and 37 points, which trail his career-high 38 points back when he was with Phoenix. In his last three games, he has converted 19 of 32 (60%) from 3-point range, and while that is not going to continue, we need to enjoy the heater. Cameron Thomas and Dennis Schroder are the other two intriguing fantasy plays, and Nicolas Claxton and Ben Simmons are in the mix because of the shallow player pool.

Today’s Top Sports Betting Pick

Guerschon Yabusele is an interesting DFS option for his salary and situation, though we can look to the under on his 6.5 rebounds prop, which is rather enticing.

Using Portfolio EV to handle the heavy lifting in finding favorable bets allows us to quickly identify inefficient odds like these. By maintaining accounts at multiple sportsbooks, we can then move swiftly to secure the best odds available.

This approach effectively pits the sportsbooks against each other, revealing that BetRivers, SugarHouse and Unibet have posted -103 odds that are markedly better than those offered by other major operators.

Odds are constantly shifting, so when you spot something favorable, jump on it. That’s the beauty and power of Portfolio EV — it helps you find the best odds at any time of day.

Stokastic’s Advanced NBA Statistical Projections have Yabusele projected for 30.7 minutes and 7.32 rebounds, which is above the seven needed for the under on the 6.5 threshold to fail. The “True Odds” of -121 and a 55% win rate show that there is an 8.1% expected ROI.

Minutes are the key for Yabusele, and if he sticks in the starting lineup — which is implied in the projections — this becomes a riskier wager. In his four games with at least 30 minutes of run, he has collected seven or more caroms in each. In his 11 other games, he has more than seven rebounds only once. His per-36-minutes rate this season has him for 8.6 rebounds, so the hope is he loses out to Ivica Zubac on the glass more often than not.
