NBA DFS Picks Today: Building Blocks

James Harden: Clippers at Wizards

Washington is on a back-to-back and have the worst defensive efficiency in the league this season (118.8) as well as the second-worst (119.6) over the last 10 games.

Los Angeles lost on Monday in Boston, with the Celtics stomping to a 126-94 victory. Prior to that, the Clippers has won five consecutive games.

James Harden should be well-rested, having played a scant 29.8 minutes in the loss on Monday and being needed for only 27.1 minutes in the 125-99 drubbing of the 76ers in Philadelphia on Sunday. The Beard has been chugging along this season, getting back to 20.5 points per game, after sliding below that mark last year, for the first time since the 2011-2012 season when he was the Sixth Man of the Year. His 8.7 assists are still strong and his 7.3 rebounds per game are the highest of the last three seasons.

Norman Powell (hamstring) may be returning from a four-game absence, or the team could push things out until Friday. There is no reason to rush him back, so if he is with the first five, expect something close to normal (cwidt) minutes, for the Clippers’ leading scorer. If Powell remains sidelined, there is really no enticing Los Angeles wing or backcourt players, with salaries having normalized for his time away from the court.

Ivica Zubac is always a strong option, though they are so many centers in the player pool, he barely cracks the top-five among the center-only pivotmen. Keep tabs on the status of Mo Bamba, who is only $3,200 on DraftKings and looking like an extreme discount dandy.

The Clippers have been a top-five defense for most of the season, which is pretty wild, considering Paul George is now in Philadelphia and Kawhi Leonard has yet to play. Rookie Alex Sarr fell just shy of the 40 fantasy point plateau last night and he has 38-plus fantasy points in three of his last five games. He should push for 30 minutes, barring foul trouble as the Wizards are looking to develop him into a franchise building block. Both DraftKings and FanDuel have granted him power forward and center eligibility, which gives him versatility for different lineup construction approaches.

Kyle Kuzma has averaged 32 minutes across his three games since returning from a groin injury and while this matchup is not as good as the one last night against the Chicago Bulls, he remains in tournament contention, as long as Jordan Poole is out with his hip impingement.

LaMelo Ball: Hornets vs. Heat

This has been an amazing stretch for LaMelo Ball, though he gets a tough matchup tonight against Miami. The Heat have been dealing with a myriad of injuries, though coach Erik Spoelstra still has his strong defensive system in place.

Charlotte is very shorthanded, so Ball has assumed an outsized share of the offensive responsibilities.

After seeing this play however, it is hard to doubt Ball. We hear of players being “In the zone!” but this play is so ridiculous, it defies a moniker. In his last five games, Ball has a usage rate of at least 41%, courtesy of 29, 27, 38 and 30 field goal attempts. He is still getting assists and rebounds, with wingman Brandon Miller also flexing the fantasy goodness, posting 47-plus fantasy points in three of the last four games.

This is a back-to-back for Miami, so they may be a little less ferocious on the defensive end. The absences of Miles Bridges, Nick Richards and Tre Mann should keep a lot of the volume with Ball and Miller, which in turn ought to offset the defensive matchup. There is always risk in any matchup, but with this way this pair is playing, they are hard to ignore, even on this expansive slate.

Rookie Tidjane Salaun however does feel like a trap for the short-handed Hornets. Salaun was the sixth overall selection in the 2024 NBA Draft, however, his is only 19-years-old, with limited experience in the French top league. He also played for various French youth teams in FIBA and international competitions.

He only played in three games, for 17 total minutes during 2022 for Cholet. Last year, he played in 33 games, averaging 22.7 minutes with a 37.3% success rate from the field, averaging 9.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 1.4 combined blocks and steals. The NBA.com scouting profile has him comparing to Otto Porter Jr., Al-Farouq Aminu and Jonas Jerebko.

Even being generous and looking at Salaun’s per 36 minute rates, he is averaging 7.8 points, 8.1 rebounds, 2.1 assists with one combined block and steal. That is around 0.67 fantasy points per minute, which is pretty much replacement level.

Does this play give warm and fuzzy feelings, considering he is projecting to be on 35%-to-40% of all rosters tonight, with the massive player pool and all the potential shenanigans creating better value plays? Of course not. So the savvy strategy would be to come in around half the field at most, if not even lower.

Today’s Top Sports Betting Pick

Karl-Anthony Towns had a monster game on Monday, with 30 points, 15 rebounds, four assists and three steals, though he also was 12-of-15 (80%) from the field.

Tonight the under on his 40.5 points + rebounds + assists (PRA) prop, is one worthy of our consideration.

Leveraging Portfolio EV to do the heavy lifting makes spotting favorable bets a breeze. With this tool, inefficient odds become easy to identify. By keeping accounts across multiple sportsbooks, you can act quickly to lock in the best available odds.

This approach effectively pits the sportsbooks against each other, revealing that FanDuel has posted -133 odds that are significantly better than those other major operators are offering.

Odds are constantly shifting, so when you spot something favorable, quick action is key. That’s where Portfolio EV comes in — it identifies the best odds available anytime, day or night.

Stokastic’s Advanced NBA Statistical Projections have Towns projected for 33.7 minutes, 25.08 points, 11.95 rebounds and 3.02 assists, which works out to 40.05 PRA. The “True Odds” of -121 and a 55% win rate show that there is a 3.2% expected ROI.

Looking at his last 12 games, Towns has averaged 44.2 PRA in just under 36 minutes. We know that coach Tom Thibodeau is a madman when it comes to minutes, so that is always a risk when looking to take the unders on his players. Still, the math works out favorably, so this risk is already taken into account for the expected ROI.
