NBA DFS Picks: Building Blocks

Anthony Edwards: Timberwolves vs. Mavericks

NBA DFS Projections
DraftKings: 44.93 | FanDuel: 43.48
NBA DFS Ownership Projections
DraftKings: 17.6% | FanDuel: 34.2%
DFS Salary
DraftKings: $8,900 | FanDuel: $9,000

This should be a fun season for Anthony Edwards as he continues to develop as one of the best two-way players in the league.

Do not expect his 39.7 minutes per game to continue, but he should slot in for around 35 to 36 most nights, which is in line with his workload over the last two seasons.

Clearly there is a concerted effort for him to take more 3-point shots, as he has a whopping 13.3 average attempts in the first three games, nearly doubling his 7.4-per-game career rate. The tradeoff between Karl-Anthony Towns and Julius Randle involves two wildly different playing styles, but someone as good as Edwards will figure out how to make things work. It also helps to have Donte DiVincenzo in the fold as well, giving the team one of the best long-range marksmen in the game to help space the floor.

Expect Edwards to continue to push his scoring average into the upper-20s, which will continue the trajectory he has been on since his rookie season (19.3, 21.3, 24.6 and 25.9). He may not get to 30 points per game this season, but keep in mind that he is only 23 years old. He should also continue to average 5 to 6 rebounds and another 5 to 6 assists, making him an excellent source of fantasy goodness.

Dallas is on a back-to-back, having topped Utah last night 110-102; this will be the Mavericks third game since Saturday. The Timberwolves last played on Saturday, so they will have the fresher legs when compared to their guests. Keep DiVincenzo, Randle, Rudy Gobert and Naz Reid in the mix for tournaments tonight.

Most of the key Mavericks saw mid-30s minutes last night in Dallas, so while they may be a little tired, it is early enough in the season that this should not be too much of a deterrent. Luka Doncic projects out with the second-best median fantasy point projection, trailing only Nikola Jokic.

The Joker also played last night, leading the Nuggets to a second half comeback victory in overtime on the road against the Toronto Raptors. Denver lost the first two games of the season at home, so the starters all saw 39-plus minutes, with Jokic getting a team-high 44 as the team secured the first win of the season. Denver also played on Saturday, much like Dallas, though Jokic had 37 minutes, which could have him a little sluggish tonight. When choosing between Doncic and Jokic, give the edge to the younger Maverick, with solace that there are other solid fantasy point-per-minute options at the pivot position.

Minnesota led the league last year by allowing a scant 106.5 points per game. Things will evolve without Towns, but having Gobert and adding a pesky perimeter defender in DiVincenzo should have the team among the better units this season. If this were a larger slate, we could skip over most of the Mavericks; however, tonight we need to give strong consideration to Kyrie Irving on FanDuel, with the various frontcourt players as neutral fantasy options across the main DFS sites.

Moses Moody: Warriors vs. Pelicans

NBA DFS Projections
DraftKings: 25.11 | FanDuel: 24.89
NBA DFS Ownership Projections
DraftKings: 50.3% | FanDuel: 28.1%
DFS Salary
DraftKings: $3,600 | FanDuel: $4,400

Stephen Curry is likely out through the weekend with a sprained ankle, which means for at least the next couple of games, Moses Moody will have the opportunity to play a prominent role.

The 22-year-old was the 14th overall selection in the 2021 NBA Draft after one strong season with the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Moody has shown flashes of upside, but he has not quite been able to consistently earn a prominent spot in the rotation. Now is as good a time as any for coach Steve Kerr to see what he has in the youngster with Curry (36) and Draymond Green (34) exiting their prime. Heck, even Andrew Wiggins (29), Kevon Looney (28) and Gary Payton II (31) are not exactly spring chickens.

De’Anthony Melton is out and Wiggins (back) is doubtful, so there will be plenty of minutes available throughout the rotation. Moody is the priority for his cheap salary, but Jonathan Kuminga, Trayce Jackson-Davis, Brandin Podziemski and newcomer Buddy Hield all are shaping up as above-average options in their respective salary ranges. Hield has been the high scorer in two of the three games this season.

New Orleans will be without Dejounte Murray for at least the next month or two after he needed surgery on his injured hand. It should be no surprise that CJ McCollum (23.3) and Brandon Ingram (22.7) are the two top scorers, but second-year man Jordan Hawkins has surprisingly averaged 18 points per game and a healthy 6.3 rebounds through the first trio of tilts. His salary has come up, but he is still in play tonight, particularly for the two-game late-slate.

Golden State remains solid on the defensive side, but without Wiggins and being short-handed, well, it could slip. That bodes well for McCollum and Ingram, with Zion Williams being a tournament target as well.

Today’s Top Sports Betting Pick

Even with all the injuries opening things up for Golden State, it still looks like a savvy strategy to look at some unders for Draymond Green.

Tonight the under on his 20.5 points + rebounds + assists prop is worthy of our attention. By using Portfolio EV to do the heavy lifting when researching favorable bets, we can quickly spot inefficient lines like this one, and having accounts at multiple sportsbooks allows us to pivot to the best number quickly. This pits the books against each other, which shows that the DraftKings line has jumped way ahead of all the other major operators.

Lines are constantly shifting and moving, so when you find a good number, pounce on it. That is the beauty and power of Portfolio EV to find the best lines at any point in the day.

Stokastic’s Advanced NBA Statistical Projections have Green projected for 26.6 minutes, 9.27 points, 6.03 rebounds and 6.01 assists for 21.31 PRA. That is above the 21 needed for this wager to fail, but not by much. Last year Green averaged 8.6 points, 7.2 rebounds and 6.0 assists for 21.8 PRA in 27.1 minutes per game.

Green is another year older, and even with Klay Thompson out of the mix, there are other scorers such as Hield, the improving Kuminga, and even Podziemski and Jackson-Davis, who will step into the void left by Curry and Wiggins. This wager is likely to go down to the wire, but with a 54% probability of success, the math is on our side.
