MLB DFS Picks: Spotlight Pitchers and Top Stacks | April 10
MLB DFS Picks: Spotlight Pitchers
Main Slate Primary Pitching Target: RHP Dylan Cease vs. Chicago Cubs — 3.8 implied runs
First Pitch: 6:40 p.m. ET
- DFS Salary: DraftKings $10,200 | FanDuel $9,900 | Yahoo n/a
The Stokastic Top Pitchers Tool has RHP Dylan Cease as the key building block at pitcher today. The 28-year-old ace began the season with a pair of games against the San Francisco Giants. While the Padres ultimately lost both games, Cease was solid, considering that this is very early in the season. Across the 10.2 innings, he has a stellar 13 strikeouts, no home runs though the four walks are a little bit of a concern. In another positive development, he has tossed 85 and 102 pitches, which has him at a something close to a mid-season workload.
Chicago has scored 71 runs, which is the second most in the league, even though the Cubbies have played four and three less games that the first and third place teams. The total has been boosted against a few subpar pitchers, as this is closer to an average offense. San Diego acquired Cease in a deal with the Chicago White Sox this spring. He is two years removed from finishing second in the American League Cy Young Award voting and there is no question he is an ace.
Main Slate Secondary Pitching Target: RHP Marcus Stroman vs. Miami Marlins — 3.5 implied runs
First Pitch: 7:05 p.m. ET
- DFS Salary: DraftKings $9,600 | FanDuel $10,100 | Yahoo $38
The Yankees could not be happier with the first two starts for RHP Marcus Stroman. The 32-year-old veteran had six innings, allowing three unearned runs in Houston and then he had a six-inning shutout against Toronto during his Bronx debut. Today he gets a matchup against arguably the worst team in the league, with the Miami Marlins having earned only one victory this season. The team has tallied two or fewer runs in half of their 12 games, which is just dreadful. Still, there are seven other teams with less runs this season, which just goes to show how deep the chasm is between the haves and the have nots.
The Marlins have a league-worst 49 wRC+ against right-handed hurlers, indicating they create runs half as efficiently as the average team. They also have the third-lowest power rating, with an .081 ISO, which is courtesy of four home runs and six doubles against righties. The projected lineup has some strikeouts available as well, which should help the fantasy production of Stroman, since he is more of a groundball pitcher. Half of the projected Miami lineup strikes out at an above league average rate, so aside from leadoff man Luis Arraez, Stroman should be in favorable situations more often than not.
In the event Stroman gains too much traction for tournaments, LHP Cody Bradford has the cherry matchup against the visiting Oakland Athletics and there is a good chance the roof will be closed in Texas, keeping Arlington pitching friendly. Bradford split time between the rotation and the bullpen last year, but he has looked good through two starts thus far.
MLB DFS Picks: Top Stacks
Main Slate Primary Target: New York Yankees vs. LHP Ryan Weathers — 5.2 implied runs
First Pitch: 7:05 p.m. ET
The Stokastic Top Stacks Tool loves the Yankees and who wouldn’t with the way the Bronx Bombers have been performing with newcomer Juan Soto slotted in front of Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton. This trio already has combined for seven home runs, eight doubles and 24 RBIs, while scoring 18 runs.
This is shaping up to be a long or short night for LHP Ryan Weathers, depending on one’s vantage point. Best case scenario, he lucks into some timely ground balls and one of the aforementioned trio is out of the lineup with some benign ailment. Worst case scenario, he is a continuation of the Yankees batting practice.
Gleyber Torres and Anthony Volpe are the two best options to round out full-stacks. Catcher Jose Trevino is a cheap source of power and fine as an addition to stacks or as a one-off.
Late Slate Target: Texas Rangers vs. RHP Ross Stripling — 5.3 implied runs
First Pitch: 8:05 p.m. ET
Even the Globe Life Field roof being closed is not going to be enough to save RHP Ross Stripling tonight. It was forever ago, or in 2018 for those being picky, that the 34-year-old landed on his lone All-Star team, in his third season with the Dodgers. Aside from a brief resurgence in 2022 while with Toronto, Stripling has at best been below-average. Last year he was with the Giants and his season essentially mirrored his 2022 campaign with Toronto, so even moving to a pitching friendly venue was not enough to save him from Father Time.
Stripling is susceptible to power bats from both sides of the plate, with a .202 ISO last year in 222 same-handed matchups and a .221 ISO against 161 lefties. Corey Seager, Marcus Semien, Adolis Garcia and Evan Carter represent the core four targets for the Rangers. Differentiation can be found on the late-slate, using Jared Walsh, along with switch-hitters Jonah Heim and Leody Taveras from the bottom of the order.
Other DFS and Sports Wagering Opportunities
If you are not able to work Adolis Garcia into your DFS lineups, or if you want to double-down on his delightful matchup, consider the +250 odds on his home run prop on FanDuel. OddsShopper shows this bet has +228 “true odds,” and the +250line currently available at FanDuel provides a solid 6.6% expected return on investment (ROI).
Using OddsShopper to scan the entire marketplace, we can see that most books are in the +150 to +174 range, which means those are likely losing bets on a long-term time horizon. Be a savvy shopper!
This wager has close something just above one-in-four odds of succeeding, which is wild, considering how hard it is to actually connect for a home run. Garcia profiles well against RHP Ross Stripling and while he has seen him only three times before in his career, going 0-2, with one walk and one strikeout, that should not dissuade anyone from taking him today. In his last 517 same-handed matchups, Garcia has an impressive .358 wOBA and .272 ISO, while Stripling cedes power to batters swinging the stick from both sides of the plate.
