MLB DFS Picks: Spotlight Pitchers

Main Slate Primary Pitching Target: LHP Yusei Kikuchi (HOU vs. LAA)

Astros vs. Angels – 3.1 implied runs
First Pitch: 8:10 p.m. ET
$9,900 at DraftKings
$10,800 at FanDuel
$48 at Yahoo

The Stokastic MLB DFS Top Pitchers tool is facing the Los Angeles Angels for the second time in a week, though tonight the game will be taking place in Houston.

In his eight appearances since joining the Astros, Kikuchi has a 5-0 record, a 3.19 ERA, 3.36 FIP and 2.79 xFIP. The seven round-trippers in this timeframe can be forgiven, with the wicked 11.06 strikeouts per nine innings.

The 33-year-old has been challenging hitters again this season, which has propelled him to the second-most strikeouts per nine innings for his career, with reasonable walks and home runs.

Anaheim won the last two games but only three of the last 11. The team is running out mostly youngsters without many pedigreed prospects. They are firmly on the short list of teams to target relentlessly between now and the end of the season, as long as there is an above-average pitcher facing them.

Main Slate Wild Card Pitching Target: RHP Erick Fedde (STL vs. PIT)

Cardinals vs. Pirates – 3.8 implied runs
First Pitch: 7:15 p.m. ET
$7,600 at DraftKings
$8,300 at FanDuel
$38 at Yahoo

If you are looking for strikeout upside, RHP Erick Fedde is not your guy. In three starts this season against Seattle, two with the White Sox and one with the Cardinals, Fedde collected only nine whiffs in 15.2 innings.

If it is run prevention and a solid fantasy outing, then Fedde is squarely in the mix as an SP2 on DraftKings and Yahoo.

Playoff dreams left the Pirates in the dust a while back, so the team has been working in more of their youngsters with the September roster expansion. Yes, steady contributors like Bryan Reynolds, Oneil Cruz, Andrew McCutchen, Joey Bart and Rowdy Tellez are still around, but this team is in the bottom third of the league for runs scored, plus at a minimum there will be inexperienced hitters like Nick Yorke and Billy Cooke in the lineup, along with struggling second-year man Jared Triolo.

MLB DFS Picks: Top Stacks

Main Slate Primary Target: Milwaukee Brewers

Brewers vs. Diamondbacks – 4.6 implied runs
First Pitch: 7:15 p.m. ET
Opposing Starter: RHP Brandon Pfaadt
DK Top Stack %: 6.2%
FD Top Stack %: 6.1%

The Stokastic MLB DFS Top Stacks Tool would like to commend RHP Brandon Pfaadt for fighting regression, but regression won. In his last start, Milwaukee got to him for eight runs, with only one extra-base hit. Yes, it was a grand slam, but everyone was seeing him well.

Pfaadt was strong through most of the summer, but over the last month, he has a 9.00 ERA in six starts, spanning 29 innings. The 36 strikeouts are impressive, but even though he has been unlucky, the contact rates are concerning when he isn’t striking out opposing batsmen.

Milwaukee has clinched the postseason, so as long as they are not running out a “hangover” lineup, they are priority plays tonight.

If they do rest some of the regulars, that will provide some discount dandies, but move this stack from a priority to a salary-saving, complementary option.

The Brewers are three games behind Philadelphia for the best record in the National League, and they are two behind the Los Angeles Dodgers to move into an even better homefield advantage situation, both for the League playoffs and the World Series, with the Brew Crew neck and neck with the Yankees and Guardians.

If it is a lineup filled with understudies tonight, then the Astros against LHP Jose Suarez or the Cubs against LHP Patrick Corbin will be the next teams to target as stacks.

Main Slate Secondary Target: New York Mets

Met vs. Phillies – 4.4 implied runs
First Pitch: 7:15 p.m. ET
Opposing Starter: RHP Taijuan Walker
DK Top Stack %: 8.3%
FD Top Stack %: 8.6%

Prior to being demoted to the bullpen, RHP Taijuan Walker had a pair of six-run outings. In his three appearances as a reliever, he has allowed five runs and two round trippers while striking out only two of the 35 batters he faced. Yikes.

This season he has a .401 wOBA and a .248 ISO against 351 hitters. His splits have been pretty even over the last two years, with lefties having a slight power edge while righties are getting more contact.

Pete Alonso, Mark Vientos, J.D. Martinez and Brandon Nimmo are the core four to target. If Francisco Lindor remains out as expected, then Jesse Winker likely could land in the two-hole, earning him a spot with the key stacking options. The Phillies do have a rested bullpen, with only four relievers seeing action over the last 72 hours. It will be interesting to see how long Walker is allowed to stay in the game if he has an early meltdown.
