MLB DFS Advice: Back Testing Our MLB Projections

sajohnson98 asked: I was wondering if you do any back testing to see how accurate the MLB projections are. I think finding that out would be interesting if you guys don’t do that already.

dacoltz: We are definitely always back testing projections both internally for the site and on my own. We compare these to other sites as well as actuals. I can definitely say I feel really good with where we stand.

One of our best deals here at Stokastic is our MLB Lineup Generator sale. For a limited time, you can get seven days of MLB Lineup Generator for just $3 when you use the promo code MLBLGWEEK!

The MLB Lineup Generator is one of our easiest-to-use but also most effective tools we offer. All you need to do is select the DFS site and slate you plan to play, choose your stack type, the level of ownership you want from your lineups (chalky, contrarian, balanced or all) and players you wish to lock in. Once you’re satisfied, Lineup Generator will churn out high-ROI lineups and give you the information to determine how you want to proceed.

Check out the included screenshot for an example of a lineup that we generated for a DraftKings weekday main slate.

MLB DFS Strategy: Hand Building MLB DFS Lineups

ltmercier91 asked: Do you hand build any of your MLB lineups? If so, what are your go-to principles for building? Do you make your larger stack first, pitcher first, small stack, randoms? I guess I’m just trying figure out what your build process is.

dacoltz: I don’t really hand build much these days, to be honest. However I used to quite often. The strategy I like to promote is figuring out which stack I like the most, especially as compared to ownership. So this may be a high-owned stack, low-owned stack or something in the middle. Based on how that stack rates in terms of ownership really influences how I am going to finish out my lineup.

Let’s say the stack is fairly chalky like a team in Coors. In this case, I go to the SP1 next. Here I am going to factor in ownership less so, but it is, of course, still a factor. If I like a chalky SP1 here, they are going to have to be really someone I love to make it with my chalky stack, but it’s possible. If it is someone that is not as chalky, then that is a lot easier. But let’s say it is someone that is quite chalky here as well. Then I know my one-offs/secondary stack and my SP2 (on DraftKings) need to be very contrarian or the lineup is just going to be chalky overall, so I go out of my way to find a very contrarian play(or plays) to fill out the roster. I do this pretty much in reverse if my lineup starts out contrarian, etc. You have a push and pull with ownership and projection, and you don’t want your lineups to get too far in either direction of either of those metrics.

Daily Fantasy Advice: Differences in Our Ownership Projections

monkeyprick asked: Is it just my imagination, or is the Contest Generator‘s ownership way more accurate than the on-site ownership?

dacoltz: We’ve done a lot of work on the Contest Generator pools over the last year in all sports. In some of those sports, we’ve moved the Contest Generator to be the ownership on the site as well. Given the results we’ve been seeing, I wouldn’t be surprised if we did that as well for MLB. There are a lot of strong points for both as well as some weak spots, but overall I think they are both really strong and I rarely adjust the Contest Generator lineups to match ownership unless they are way different.

One thing that is pulling some of those differences is how folks react to the Sims, which we continue to try to keep in mind as well. I think the main site ownership projections are really similar in terms of accuracy, and I trust both. But we are definitely watching it.
