MLB DFS Contrarian Pitcher

Yankees-Angels: Tyler Anderson

Stokastic’s Top 2 Pitcher Rate
DraftKings: 7.1%
DFS Salary
DraftKings: $7,300

Even with only seven games in play tonight, there are good pitching options across every price point. As such, ownership is pretty spread out amongst arms, with nine pitchers projected to be double digit owned. That leaves us with only a few contrarian pitchers to choose from, and Angels left-hander Tyler Anderson has emerged as the best of the bunch.

Matched up with the Yankees at home, this is clearly not an ideal spot for Anderson. That said, Anderson has actually pitched really well this season, and he’s in excellent form coming off two of his best starts of the season. After putting up a combined 46.6 fantasy points in matchups against the Rangers and Astros, Anderson is still getting forgotten about on DraftKings as only Ty Blach and Chris Flexen are projected for less ownership.

Anderson has undoubtedly been the Angels best starting pitcher so far this season. Coming into tonight averaging 17.5 DraftKings points per game, Anderson sports a 2.52 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 44:23 K:BB through 64.1 innings. Though his 4.62 xERA calls for some negative regression, the field is acting as if that regression is guaranteed to come tonight. Not only is Anderson getting no love, but the Yankees are also projected to be the third highest owned stack on the board.

As of this writing, Anderson is projected to be a Top-2 pitcher 7.1% of the time this slate plays out. With only 1.1% of lineups expected to roster him, it makes sense why he looks so good from a leverage perspective. These numbers aren’t even taking into consideration the ownership the Yankees are pulling, only making Anderson look that much better.

MLB DFS Contrarian Stack

Astros-Mariners: Astros

Stokastic’s Top Stack Projection
DraftKings: 4.9%
Ownership Projection
DraftKings: 2.7%

Unlike at pitcher where ownership is pretty spread out, three stacks are projected to get the majority of love tonight. As of this writing, 41.5% of the total ownership on this slate is going to the Guardians, Yankees and Blue Jays. While these three offenses look very good in their own rights, almost every other stack is going to be contrarian. Although I don’t love the spot Houston is in matched up with George Kirby in Seattle, The Astros aren’t getting nearly the love they should be getting on a small seven-game slate.

Kirby is one of the top young pitchers in baseball and someone I very rarely like to target bats against. Stacking the Astros here is simply a play on their talent, not ‘wanting’ to pick on Kirby in any way shape or form. That being said, Kirby isn’t impervious to getting hit, and anytime we can get an offense as good as Houston at such low ownership it’s worth at least thinking about. Surely the Guardians, Yankees and Blue Jays are in better spots on paper, but when Houston has success, their upside is just as high as any offense in baseball.

Houston currently projects to be the top stack 4.9% of the time this slate plays out. With only 2.7% of the field expected to stack them, the Astros are the top contrarian stack on the slate.
