The PGA Tour’s west coast swing has come to a close as the tour begins moving east. This week’s Mexico Open will feature a field that is desperate for star power, as only one player inside the top 40 in the Official World Golf Rankings will be teeing it up. Let’s continue our PGA DFS picks series by taking a deeper look at our Mexico Open core plays.
The course, Vidanta Vallerta, is a bombers paradise. The 7,400+ yard par 71 layout features wide fairways, paspalum grass throughout, and minimal trouble off of most tee boxes. Playing as the 6th longest course on TOUR, I’ll be targeting golfers who hit it long off the tee, and are good with their long irons to attack some of these mammoth holes.
These Mexico Open core plays will get you started on building a great PGA DFS picks lineup. Mexico Open Core Plays
Stephen Jaeger – $9,800
Jaeger has been on an impressive run of play over the last year, making the cut in 20 straight events. Over the last 75 rounds he leads this field in birdie or better percentage, and ranks 10th in bogey avoidance. He also ranks top 12 amongst this field in strokes gained off the tee, on approach, and around the green within that same time frame. With back to back top 20 finishes in this event over the last two years, and an average driving distance of 307 yards, he checks a lot of the boxes I’m looking for this week.
Davis Thompson – $8,900
Thompson is one of the bright, up and coming players on the PGA TOUR. Coming off a 15th place finish at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, his game appears to be in a great spot heading into this week’s event that features a much softer field. He’s made the cut in 11 of his last 13 events, including 3 finishes inside the top 16. Averaging 308 yards off the tee, and ranking 6th in proximity to the pin from 200+ yards, he sets up very nicely to attack this lengthy course setup.
Sam Stevens – $7,100
Stevens is typically a golfer I tend to avoid due to his inaccuracy off the tee and general lack of upside in stronger field events. However, this week presents a setup where those two issues are heavily mitigated. With an average driving distance of 312 yards, Stevens is undoubtedly one of the longer hitters in this field which should be a massive advantage. In addition, the penalty for missing the fairway is drastically minimized on this track given the short rough. This is the type of course that suits his game perfectly. Coming off made cuts in six of his last seven starts, he presents very nice value at the bottom of the $7k range.
Joseph Bramlett – GPP Flier – $6,800
This is a GPP only play, as the recent numbers on Bramlett aren’t great. He’s missed the cut in seven of his last 10 starts, and hasn’t had a top 20 finish since the Memorial in June of last year. However, with an average driving distance of 312 yards, I believe this is a potential ‘get right’ spot for the 2021 Korn Ferry Tour champion.
Bramlett has seen success on longer layouts in his career. He has three top 25 finishes at the Farmers Insurance Open hosted at the 7,700 yard layout of Torrey Pines. In addition, he has a 16th place finish at the aforementioned Memorial Tournament, which also measures in at over 7,500+ yards. I don’t expect Bramlett to garner much ownership this week given his recent results, but he could be a potential differentiator in large field GPP’s this week.
Hopefully these PGA DFS core plays, PGA DFS Picks and our hyper-focus on Mexico Open core plays proved useful.
