Preseason Week 2 Thursday News & Notes

Starter News

The Eagles plan to use their starters for just one or two drives, while the Patriots are probably going to feature most of their starters and give extended opportunities to rookies vying for positions.

Passing Yards Props

  • Kenny Pickett: 96.5
  • Drake Maye: 78.5
  • Joe Milton: 69.5

DST and Kicker Ownership

Kickers are projected almost as highly as defenses but tend to have much lower ownership, especially in the Captain spot. The Patriots roster includes two kickers, Joey Slye and Chad Ryland, making the kicker position a potential area to avoid. However, Slye could be an intriguing option tonight, as he had the only field goal attempt for the Patriots in their last game.

While defenses are solid choices, if you want to differentiate yourself in large-field GPPs, you might consider avoiding each of the DSTs. If both DSTs underperform, you could significantly reduce the number of competing lineups.

Quarterback

For the Eagles, Kenny Pickett and Tanner McKee will split time after the starters exit. McKee is likely to be less owned than Pickett, primarily because Pickett is more widely recognized. On the Patriots side, reports suggest that Maye might see up to two quarters of play. Jerod Mayo has indicated that Drake Maye will receive more reps. After Maye, it will be Bailey Zappe and Milton handling mop-up duties. Since the Patriots played four quarterbacks in their last game, it’s challenging to target anyone beyond Maye.

Running Back

Kenneth Gainwell is expected to receive some early work for Philadelphia before being replaced by a mix of Will Shipley, Lew Nichols and Kendall Milton. This group is difficult to project as there was no clear lead back in the last game, with carries split evenly. New England’s Kevin Harris had a standout performance last time, leading the team in snap percentage and routes run. He is the best option but will be popular. JaMycal Hasty is the next-best choice.

Wide Receiver

The Patriots are expected to continue evaluating their younger receivers, so Kayshon Boutte, Javon Baker and Ja’Lynn Polk are likely to see significant playing time. John Ross, Joseph Ngata, Johnny Wilson and Britain Covey are expected to get the most work on the Eagles. Ross could be a great low-owned Captain option.

Tight End

The Patriots are likely to dress four tight ends, with Mitchell Wilcox and Jaheim Bell being the best bets. For the Eagles, if Grant Calcaterra and Albert Okwuegbunam are sidelined, the tight end position could be thin. In that case, E.J. Jenkins would be the top option, followed by Kevin Foelsch.

Core Plays

  • Patriots DST
  • Eagles DST
  • Jake Elliott (K, Eagles)
  • Drake Maye (QB, Eagles)

Secondary Plays

  • Kayshon Boutte (WR, Patriots — Long look last game)
  • Javon Baker (WR, Patriots)
  • Ja’Lynn Polk (WR, Patriots)
  • Bailey Zappe (QB, Patriots — likely will get the second longest look tonight on the Patriots.)
  • Britain Covey (WR, Eagles)
  • Johnny Wilson (WR, Patriots)
  • Mitchell Wilcox (TE, Patriots)
  • EJ Jenkins (TE, Eagles)
  • JaMycal Hasty (RB, Eagles)

GPP Fliers & Contrarian Picks

  • John Ross (WR, Eagles — only takes one.)
  • Joe Milton (QB, Patriots — Rushing upside but might not get a lot of work.)
  • Patriots Kickers: If one of the kickers gets significant play, they could potentially break the slate at low ownership. Consider leaning towards Slye, who had the only field goal attempt for the Patriots last week. He could be a strong contrarian Captain choice.
