MLB DFS Strategy: What Sports Give You the Best Chance of Making Money?
@heyimdrew95 asked: As I’m getting more into DFS, possibly making the switch to do this as a primary source of income, I wanted to know: What sports do you think present the most opportunities for money to be made, or strategies to maximize return? Are there any sports you find easier? Also, when making the switch to full-time, what resources helped you the most, whether it be making better decisions on players, how to approach it, or anything that gave you great advice along the way?
dacoltz: Lots to unpack there — first of all, which sport is the easiest. That’s tricky, as it depends on your skillset. I think NFL is the easiest in general, but the sample size is super small to just a few slates a year compared to the daily sports, which are such a bigger sample size, so it’s tricky to rely too heavily on NFL itself even if the ROI is the best.
Out of the daily sports, I think NBA and MLB are probably pretty similar, at least according to my ROI, but if you are better at one or the other, you might be able to do better at one of them. I see people that crush MLB and aren’t good at NBA or vice versa. I haven’t found nearly the same success at some of the other sports like PGA or NASCAR, but I haven’t put nearly as much effort into them either.
In regards to what resources helped the most, I would probably say any types of “training,” whether that is YouTube videos on DFS or even an off-topic session that makes you think outside of the box a bit. This thinking is super helpful in DFS, especially if there are some exercises to do with the video where you actually need to formulate your own answers instead of just being told them. A lot of folks have stopped a lot of this critical thinking, and DFS is the ultimate test of you get rewarded/penalized for making correct/wrong assumptions instead of being able to “lie” your way through things.

MLB DFS Advice: Using Sims for Smaller Fields
phillyphantom1 asked: Any advice on how to better use the Sims for contests under 250 field size?
dacoltz: The way I sort of think about these contests that are quite large or quite small is you are sort of adjusting how much upside you need. For example, if you have a super-small contest that is, say, 100 people and is 30% to first. The upside you might need to do well on this contest is quite similar to a contest that is 500 people with 15% to first. I don’t have an exact conversion table, and I don’t know if there needs to be, but I think that is a good way to pull multiple levers.
So if you are wanting to do a smaller contest than what we offer, I would pull the lever of reducing the amount to first and using a larger pool; it’s likely not even a bad idea to use an even bigger pool and pulling the amount to first down even more to just give you more lineups to choose from. Even if we had a 100-player option, I would do this by picking a 250 pool with 15% to first instead of using a 100 pool with 25% to first just to get those extra lineups to grade against.
Daily Fantasy Strategy For 150-Maxing MMA and NASCAR
Melissa H asked: A couple of sports I know absolutely nothing about are NASCAR and MMA. If I enter 150 lineups in a mini-MAX, for example, is my best course to just take the 150 top-ROI lineups without adjustment? With no individual knowledge, aka personal bias, the only adjustments I might make would be based on Greg Ehrenberg’s weekly MMA video.
dacoltz: That would be your best call of action over the long run if you don’t have any personal takes. The main other considerations I would say are 1) Do you feel like the lineups are getting too concentrated on any specific players? If so, you could just ROI down-boost those players to take on more risk. This will likely lower your ROI in the long run but be better for bankroll management.
2) Similar to above, ROI sorts will give you the best lineups over the long run; however, that brings on more risk. You could sort in some lineups with high cash rates if you want to take a slightly lower ROI but again reduce your variation in results. 3) There are a fair amount of people doing what you are suggesting. In games like MMA and NASCAR, dupes start to become a problem since there are only so many combinations, and if the Sims like it for you, it may for other users as well. I haven’t seen this be a big problem, but it is at least a bit of one. So you could sort out lineups that you see having multiple dupes. None of these are requirements but things you could consider!
